Emergency crews from the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm district’s fire and disaster-protection services also responded.

“One person was injured,” the district said in a statement, adding that “the emergency response measures have since ended.” It said could not provide further details about the circumstances of the crash.

The 52nd Fighter Wing operates F-16 fighter jets in support of U.S. and NATO missions.

In October 2019, a U.S. F-16 crashed near Zemmer-Rodt, south of the base, during a routine training flight. The pilot ejected and suffered minor injuries.

The German Defense Ministry has not responded to POLITICO’s request for comment.
