Two-thirds of Labour Party members support replacing the pensions triple lock, while the wider public leans towards keeping it, new polling by Survation in partnership with LabourList and BabelFish Media suggests.
The polling, conducted last week before the Prime Minister’s conference speech, highlights a number of differences between Labour members and the wider public on key policy questions.
However, the poll found similar levels of support among Labour members and the wider public for a proposal for the government to introduce fixed-price arrangements for North Sea oil and gas. Some 48 per cent of Labour members and 41 per cent of the public said they would favour the proposal.
Under the proposal, the government would agree a fixed, guaranteed price with North Sea oil and gas producers, similar to the contracts-for-difference model used for renewable energy. Producers would repay the difference when market prices rise above the agreed price, while the government would top up payments when prices fall below it. Supporters argue that the approach could provide greater stability for energy prices and protect consumers from sudden price spikes. Whereas critics argue it could result in the government paying producers more than the market price at times, and question whether the government should intervene in this way.
Speaking at LabourList’s Party Conference event, ‘The State of the Party: What Labour can learn from its members’, held in partnership with Survation and BabelFish Media, Dale Vince, founder of Ecotricity and BabelFish Media, said: “It’s our North Sea, it’s our oil and gas, we should set the price. It’s actually a really complex subject, but in some ways it’s really simple, again, it’s about fairness.”
LabourList editor Emma Burnell also stressed the importance of listening to members. “As a party that was established to give a voice to those who previously weren’t given a voice in politics, we need to make sure that we are consistently and constantly hearing from them,” she said.
Burnell added that polling can give members a voice while also helping to inform political debate, highlighting what is going well within the party and where there is room for change.
